Brufut Dents Gunjur’s Quarter Final Hope
Just days after news of a successful appeal against Brufut stormed the Sannehmentereng boys, they regrouped themselves to win 2-0 over a struggling Gunjur zonal team in the ongoing Africell Sponsored Soper Nawettan.
Gunjur started brightly and came close to scoring in the 19th minute when their diminutive forward, Mbemba Manneh flashed his shot wide when he should have done better. Another chance went begging for Gunjur in the 27th minute. This time it was Yusupha Janneh who was at the receiving end. Yusupha, received a teasing cross from Mbemba Manneh and he scooped his shot wide to the dismayed of Gunjur faithfuls.
Gunjur’s Mbemba Manneh grow into the match, showing glimpse of his brilliance with his quick feet and passing range. Mbemba dribbled and danced passed couple of Brufut players before he fed Tijan Taal who blasted his over the crossbar.
Brufut were lackluster early on and their most potent attacking threat gave birth to the first goal of the encounter in the 32nd minute. Karim Chorr dispossessed a sluggish Ousman Barrow and teed up Yusupha Jatta who was clawed to the ground by Gunjur goalkeeper, Alieu Ceesay. The Central referee, Lamin N. Jammeh point straight to the penalty spot for a penalty kick for Brufut. Karim Chorr stepped in and calmly converted the penalty by sending the goalkeeper in the wrong way.
Just two minutes after the break, Gunjur could have levelled the scoreline if not a wasteful Lamin Touray who flicked his header across the face of goal from the near post.
Ousman Barrow alias Reberto Carlos had a chance to amend for his mistake that led to Brufut first goal. Mbemba Manneh played a delicious through ball for Barrow who ballooned his powerful shot high over the crossbar when he had lot of options in the box.
Brufut had a rear opportunity in the 79th minute. Their experience midfield ace, Abdou Gomes fired a strong shot which Gunjur netminder Alieu Ceesay spilled into the path of Assan Njie who inexplicable missed from close range.
Adama Saidy scored at the stroke of full time when he finished a fine team displayed by Brufut. Brufut knocked the ball around with the intension of taming the tempo of the match. Assan Njie burst forward with power and sped down in the left channel of Brufut’s attack and teed the ball for his number 10, Adama Saidy to buried the ball home for Brufut’s 2-0.
