Ex-Gambian International Launches Kidney Foundation

Lamin village born and former Gambia Ports Authority and Brikama United player John Bass; launched his Kidney foundation in an attempt to ameliorate, abreast and raised awareness on Kidney disease.

John Bass who is a victim of a kidney failure launched his foundation which is geared towards raising awareness on Kidney and it related problems. John football career came to a premature ending when he came to realise that he has kidney failure while he was called up to represent the Gambia at senior level.

The ex-Brikama United player revealed the ordeals he had gone through when he was given the podium to set more lights on the foundation. However, John was quick to told the audience that he is on the podium to talk about his predicaments and not his short football career. “Today though, I am not here to talk about my football career, I am here to talk about the next chapter of my life. The John Bass Kidney Foundation. The idea I conceived when I fell victim of kidney failure myself”. He added “During my ordeal with the desease, I got the inspiration, looking at all the people suffering and worse case scenario dying as a result of the sickness, it hit me that I had to do something to prevent others from falling victim too”. Ex-port Authority defender said.

John, the left footed centre-back cum left back said, many people do not even know the signs and symptoms of kidney disease. John a kidney failure patient himself, said he never realised that he is suffering from the disease until the time he went to the hospital for medical check up. He said What he has experienced as a victim himself, that’s one of the reasons that motivated him set up a foundation that will help acquaint people on the signs and symptoms of the disease.


He said “Using myself as reference, I realized that alot of people don’t even know of the desease, this is why I have decided to set this up to help create awareness about the desease and how to prevent oneself from it. I will share my knowledge with the world and with the foundation try to provide as much help I can to the already infected.” John Bass explained.

Malang Bojang, the Secretary General of John Bass Kidney foundation took time to set more light on the objectives of the foundation. He said among many others the foundation objective is to organise symposia and also to reach out to clubs to acquaint clubs on Kidney disease and other health related problems. “We planned to have a Health Peep talk with both First and Second Division Clubs throughout the country before the commencement of every season and also to other Sporting clubs and even National Teams within the country.” Malang Bojang said.

Malang Bojang, a student of the University of the Gambia also stress on the importance of the day. He said the day was a remarkable day as they’re also celebrating the life of a brother alive and not the usual eulogy for a death person. “Today is a great day. A day of deep reflection for we are to celebrate the life of one of us whilst he is still alive. This day is a memorable day in the annals of our entire Sporting circle for a historic moment is laid before us to be launched.” Malang Bojang said.

When John needed divine intervention, it was his cousin brother, Vincent who came to his aid by donating a kidney to him. John’s kidney Foundation was launched at Semaga Janneh memorial hall in Latrikunda Sabiji with the theme “Kidney Patients deserve to lead fulfilled lives with quality care and choice”.
