Meet Malick Sambou: The Senegalese Born Brikama United Star Who’s Ready To Represent The Gambia At Any Level
Malick Sambou, Brikama Uinted midfielder said he is ready to represent The Gambia’s national teams despite been Senegalese.
Malick Sambou alias Pogba was born on 8th August 1998 in Bindiona Casamance, the southern part of Senegal.
“Despite being a Senegalese nationality, I will represent The Gambia at any category of the national team, if the country needs my services and I have spoken to my family about that”. Malick said.
Sambou quit school when he was in elementary level to take up the challenge of pursuing his dreams of becoming a professional football player. After quitting school, the Bindiona native joined Salifu Diao football academy in 2010, in Senegal and spent 3 years there.
Pogba as many call him rapidly caught the attention of top clubs in the Senegalese first division at the Salifu Diao Academy at a tender age.
In 2016 he moved to Olympic de Ngor, a Dakar based first division club, where he signed two years contract but didn’t last until the end of his contract, as Olympic de Ngor was invited to compete in a tournament organized by Real de Banjul, in The Gambia who were celebrating their 50 years of existence. During the tournament which was played at the country’s Independence Stadium, he awarded as the most outstanding player of the tournament.
The Bindiona native’s impressive showing during the Real @50 earned him a move to Real De Banjul. A move that coincided with his former club (Olympic De Ngor’s) relegation to the Senegalese second division.
Unfortunately for Malick, he could only feature four times for Real in the season. The midfielder eventually left Real De Banjul for Brikama United 2018 in search of playing time.
After signing for Brikama United the 21 year old midfielder became a hit for the club, as he immensely contributed to help them win the league title in his first season with Brikama (2018/19 season).
Modou Lamin Nyassi, the head coach of Brikama United, said they snapped Malick Sambou when his goalkeeper trainer spotted him playing in Cassamance whilst holidays. “I told him to invite the said player for trials at Brikama United, he played and i was impressed with his performance” Nyassi said.
The Brikama coach said Malick later told me he was playing for Real De Banjul, whom (Real) contacted and fortunately they gave him the green light to acquire his services.
The Brikama United tactician went on to say that the 21 year old is a very hardworking player, who always does extra training sessions for himself and he understands the game very well. If he maintains the trend, I have no doubt that he can be a professional player in the soonest possible time.
