Players Are Irresponsible And Disrespectful to Their Country, Says Saintfiet
By Binta Bah.
Tom Saintfiet, the Gambia national team head coach accuses Gambia players of been irresponsible and disrespectful to their country after guiding the Scorpions to CAF qualifier proper.
Tom Saintfiet made the statement during the post-match press conference of the Scorpions’ second leg tie against Djibouti in Bakau.
The Belgian made his frustration known by describing some Gambian international stars irresponsible and disrespectful.
“It’s very strange that players are irresponsible and disrespectful to their country”.
Tom boldly told reporters at the presser that; “I can give you their numbers so you can ask them why they didn’t show up, because they disrespect the national team.”
Saintfiet did not mention which players he refers to as irresponsible and disrespectful. But he did give reasons as to why Ibou Touray, Ibou Adams and Hamza Barry couldn’t make the Djibouti ties.
“Ibou Touray and Ibou Adams, I spoke with them but (sic) if I leave my club I don’t have my position and I prefer a career in England than play against Djibouti”.
“Maybe it’s because last game they were on the bench. I have a lot of players but we have to understand that coaches take decisions. You have to fight yourself in the team”.
“Hamza Barry was invited against Algeria the first stage, he told me fourteen-fifteen months ago, he told me coach don’t invite me in October-November because I don’t have a new contract yet, I want to focus on my team”.
The Scorpions coach named Hamza in his preliminary squad for the Djibouti games, but the midfielder didn’t make the trip to the horn of Africa.
“He got his flight ticket the same time I got it and day after we got a message that he is injured”.
Hamza Barry, Baboucarr Steve Trawally and Modou Barrow are yet to play for the Scorpions since Tom Saintfiet was hired.
“I have never meet Hamza, I never meet Modou, I never meet Modou and never fought with any player”.
“Maybe there are histories before me that is why they are not coming, because remember also before me sometimes they didn’t show up”.
“I still didn’t give up Hamza, I don’t give up Modou, and I don’t give up Steve. I still want them to come, I never had problem with them”.
The Gambia crawled pass minors Djibouti 3- 2 on penalties, following a one all draw and 2-2 on aggregate to reach Cameroun 2021 CAF qualifier group stage proper.
The Gambia is in Group D with DR Congo, Gabon and Angola. The Scorpions’ first match will be an away to Angola on the 13th November, 2019.
