Yakarr Academy Holds Women Football Festival

Adama Jarju, the founder of Yakarr football Academy and a co-opted member of West Coast Football Association (WCRFA) Executive commemorates her Birthday with women football Festival.

For the third year running, Adama, a women football advocate decided to promote women football on her Birthday. This year Yakarr football Festival attracted eight teams from Sifoe Village and its satellite villages, namely: Yakarr Football Academy, Greater Tomorrow Academy, Penyem FC, Queens of Lamin, Bakary Sambuya FC, Kartong United, Seeds of Kitty FC and Manduar FC.

Adama Jarju, who is a former footballer of Jam City and Gambia Football Federation (GFF) Women Football Ambassador said that she organises Women Football Festival to abreast her community and Gambia at large on the importance of Football.

“I organised this event in partnership with Yakarr football academy to enlighten the people of Sifoe Village and the surrounding on the importance of Sports and women football in particular” Adama said. Miss Jarju went on: ” Since the establishment of my Academy, Yakarr Football Academy, the number of young girls involving in women football is increasing”.

Ellen Sambou, a teacher cum Coach of Bakary Sambuya female football team, also expressed her delight in participating in this year Yakarr football academy women football Festival. “Seeing girls playing like boys really motivates my girls. For us what mattered most is participation and we’re performing to the best our abilities. Our girls learned a lot from this festival. Playing against second division teams is really something that excite my team” Ellen Sambou said.

Binta Badjie, one of the most exciting talents of Yakarr Football Academy also talked to our reporter on her personal ambitions. ” I’m not only playing football for pleasure but to make a living out of it. My dream is to become a professional footballer and represent my country one day”.

Yakarr Football Academy was established three years ago by Miss Adama Jarju. Adama, through her academy, organises women football festival every year on her birthdays. The theme of this year’s event was ” Women’s Empowerment through Sports”.
